Understanding Pain Patterns in the Body

Pfluger’s 5 Laws of Pain illustrate acute to chronic pain patterns and how pain is distributed throughout the body.  It is absolutely crucial for a practitioner to know these laws of pain in order to properly treat and assess patients who are suffering from chronic pain such as degenerative disc disease or sciatic pain.

The nervous system is designed to produce normal muscle tonus at 30 stimuli per second.  If the body is under stress, physical or emotional trauma, the nervous system stimuli increases its rate per second and if left untreated, this over stimulus to the body will spread to other areas of the body eventually causing a general contraction off all the major muscles, having a profound effect on the entire Cranial Sacral System as well as all the systems of the body thus starting a “chronic pain cycle” Think of it as an overload in an electric circuit. Bringing the stimuli back down through NeuroMuscular Therapy and CranioSacral Therapy Treatments will ultimately “Pull the plug” on the pain cycle.

Have you ever wondered why your pain has traveled to the opposite side of your body? Or why you are now starting to get headaches, migraines, neck pain?  Or why it is traveling throughout your body effecting other areas including the different systems of the body such as digestive issues, anxiety, depression, heart palpitations, skin rashes etc?  Here are the 5 Laws of Pain explained:

The 5 NeuroMuscuar Laws of Chronic Pain

Law 1 Unilaterality

Law 1 Unilaterality

Law 1 Unilaterality

Suffering from Frozen Shoulder

  • Pain will be very localized to just the site of injury.

Law 2 Symmetry

Law 1 Unilaterality

Law 1 Unilaterality

Shoulder injury

  • If  not properly treated, the nervous system stimuli will increase causing the pain to persist on the original site of injury and move to the equal and opposite side.
  • This is why patients begin to feel their pain traveling to the opposite side.

Law 3 Intensity

Law 1 Unilaterality

Law 4 Radiation

Shoulder injury and frozen shoulder

  • Pain will greatly intensify at the original point of trauma with a lesser pain although still present on the opposite side.
  • Now patients begin to feel pain on both sides.

Law 4 Radiation

Law 5 Generalization

Law 4 Radiation

  • Pain will radiate up the body from the original injury site toward the brain and radiate outward and into extremities (arms and legs), causing headaches, migraines, neck pain, shoulder pain, elbow pain, wrist pain and numbness/tingling in fingers

Law 5 Generalization

Law 5 Generalization

Law 5 Generalization

Suffering from chronic pain

  • Without proper treatment, every system of the body will become affected:
  • Respiratory System
  • Cardiovascular System
  • Digestive System
  • Endocrine System
  • Also mental/emotional well-being of the patient.
  • This is why patients have now begun to have digestive issues, anxiety, heart palpitations, skin rashes and hormone disorders just to name a few.
